The Hague is the only major Dutch city with its own beach — several, in fact. From the buzz of Scheveningen to the quieter dunes to the north and the one-of-a-kind lagoon of the Zandmotor, there's a kite spot for every wind and every level within fifteen minutes of the centre.
Here are five of the best spots in and around The Hague (Den Haag).
Scheveningen
The city's iconic beach and one of the liveliest kite spots in the country. The northern stretch (Noorderstrand) has a dedicated kite zone away from the crowds, with consistent wind and a fun wave when there's swell. There's a real scene here in season.
Trams and buses run straight to the boulevard, and the pier, cafés and surf shops are all on hand. Best in 15–28 knots. Respect the zones — this beach gets very busy.
Kijkduin
The Hague's second beach resort, just south of Scheveningen and noticeably more relaxed. Kijkduin has a wide beach, good wind and enough room to spread out, making it a nice alternative when Scheveningen is heaving.
Easy parking and a handful of beach pavilions for the post-session beer. Best in 15–25 knots from the west.
Zandmotor (Ter Heijde)
A true one-off. The "sand engine" is a giant man-made peninsula that has formed a shallow, flat lagoon behind it — flatwater on one side, open sea on the other. The lagoon is fantastic for beginners and freestyle, while the seaward side offers waves for the more experienced.
It's a bit of a walk from the car park, but the payoff is one of the most versatile spots on the coast. Best in 15–28 knots — and mind the changing sandbanks.
Wassenaarse Slag
North of Scheveningen and backed by dunes, Wassenaarse Slag is a broad, uncrowded beach with plenty of space and clean wind. It's a favourite escape when the city beaches fill up, with a calmer, more natural feel.
Good parking right behind the beach and a couple of cafés. Best in 15–25 knots.
's-Gravenzande
Just south of the Zandmotor, 's-Gravenzande offers a long, open beach with dependable wind and room to ride. It's the quietest of the bunch and a great choice for a mellow session away from the crowds.
Combine it with the Zandmotor lagoon on a light day and you've got the best of both. Best in 15–25 knots.
Tips for kitesurfing near The Hague
- Car-free: Scheveningen and Kijkduin are reachable by tram from the city centre — perfect if you don't want to drive.
- Kite zones: The city beaches enforce seasonal kite zones from spring to autumn. Launch and land only within them and keep clear of swimmers.
- Zandmotor: The lagoon shifts with the tides and storms — scout the water before you rig, especially if you're learning.
- Wetsuit: 5/4mm for most of the year, 3/2mm in high summer, 6/5mm with boots and gloves in winter.
