Rotterdam sits right where the Maas meets the North Sea — which means the city is surrounded by kitesurfing options. Wave beaches lie minutes to the west, and some of the best flatwater in the Netherlands is a short drive south, around Voorne and Zeeland.

Hoek van Holland
The closest sea beach to the city, right at the mouth of the Nieuwe Waterweg. It's a wide, sandy beach with plenty of launch space and reliable wind straight off the North Sea. Watching the big ships slide past on their way into Europe's largest port is part of the experience.
Easy to reach by car or even the metro, with parking, beach clubs and rescue cover in season. Best in 15–28 knots from the west; gets busy on sunny weekends.
Maasvlakte 2
On the seaward edge of the port's newest land, the Maasvlakte beach is huge, open and often emptier than Hoek van Holland. It catches clean sea wind and builds a decent wave when it's blowing hard — a favourite for riders who want space to send it.
There's little shelter, so it's best once you're confident with bigger conditions. Bring everything you need; facilities are minimal. Best in 18–30 knots.
Oostvoornse Meer
This inland lake near Brielle is the go-to flatwater spot around Rotterdam. Shallow edges, no waves and no tide make it ideal for learning and for grinding out freestyle tricks. Several kite schools operate here for exactly that reason.
A grassy, sandy launch and a relaxed atmosphere round it off. Best in 15–25 knots — the water stays flat even when it's honking.
Brouwersdam
The most famous kite spot in the region, and worth the drive. The Brouwersdam separates the North Sea from the flat Grevelingenmeer, so you get both worlds on one dam: flatwater on the lake side for freestyle and learning, waves on the sea side when there's swell.
It's a genuine kite destination with schools, shops and a real community vibe. Pick the side that suits the day and your mood. Best in 15–30 knots.
Rockanje
On the Voorne coast, Rockanje is a broad, gently shelving beach that stays quieter than the spots closer to the city. It's a friendly place to ride waves without the crowds, with dunes behind and lots of room to lay out your lines.
A good shout when the popular beaches are packed. Best in 15–25 knots from the west.

- Sea vs. lake: Choose the sea beaches for waves and space, and the Oostvoornse Meer or Grevelingenmeer for flat, tide-free water and learning.
- Tides: Most sea spots work at all tides, but launch areas shrink at high water — aim for lower tide if you want maximum beach.
- Seasons: Spring and autumn deliver the most wind. A 5/4mm wetsuit covers most of the year; go thicker with boots and gloves in winter.
- Port traffic: Near Hoek van Holland and the Maasvlakte, keep well clear of shipping channels and stay inside the designated areas.
