Porto shares the same summer Nortada as the rest of the Portuguese coast, and its beaches sit right on the doorstep of the city. Best of all, at the mouth of the Douro you'll find Cabedelo — one of the best flatwater-and-wave combos in the country — just twenty minutes from the centre.

Cabedelo (Vila Nova de Gaia)
Porto's signature spot, on the sandspit where the Douro meets the Atlantic. A shallow, flat lagoon forms behind the beach — perfect for beginners and freestyle — while the ocean side serves up waves for the more experienced. Steady Nortada makes it work almost daily in summer.
Schools, rental and a friendly crew make it the natural place to start. Best in 15–25 knots.
Matosinhos
The big city beach just north of the Douro, and reachable by metro. Matosinhos is wide and sandy with dependable wind and a fun beach break — a classic after-work session for Porto locals.
It's a busy urban beach, so ride at the designated ends and watch for surfers and swimmers. Best in 15–25 knots.
Leça da Palmeira
Immediately north of Matosinhos, past the marina and lighthouse, Leça has a series of beaches that stay a little quieter than the main city sands. Same reliable Nortada, a bit more elbow room, and some fun rocky-point waves at the edges.
A good alternative when Matosinhos is packed. Best in 15–25 knots.
Espinho
South of the Douro, Espinho is a long, open beach with consistent wind and plenty of space — one of the most dependable wave spots in the region. It handles a crowd easily and has a proper seaside-town feel.
Reachable by train from Porto, too. Best in 15–28 knots.
Furadouro (Ovar)
Further south towards Aveiro, Furadouro is a big, uncrowded beach for riders who want space and clean Atlantic wind away from the city. Wide sands and steady Nortada make for long, satisfying sessions.
There's little shelter, so it's best once you're comfortable in open-beach conditions. Best in 18–28 knots.
Tips for kitesurfing near Porto
- Season: Like Lisbon, the Nortada is strongest from May to September and builds through the afternoon. Check the forecast and aim for the sea-breeze window.
- Start at Cabedelo: The lagoon is the safest place to learn or find your feet before taking on the open-beach spots.
- Wetsuit: Northern Portugal's water is cool — a 4/3mm is a good all-rounder, with a 3/2mm only in the height of summer.
- City access: Matosinhos (metro) and Espinho (train) are the easiest to reach without a car.
