Lisbon is one of Europe's best summer kite bases. From roughly May to September the Nortada — a strong, reliable northerly thermal — switches on almost daily, and within 40 minutes of the city you can pick from Atlantic wave beaches or a warm, flat lagoon.

Guincho
The Lisbon classic and a genuinely world-class wave spot. Framed by the Sintra hills and dunes, Guincho gets powerful Nortada wind and serious Atlantic swell all summer. When it's on, it's spectacular — and demanding.
Strong wind, side-shore waves, current and rocks mean this one is for experienced riders. Check the forecast carefully and rig small. Often 25–35 knots on a summer afternoon.
Lagoa de Albufeira
South of the Tagus, this coastal lagoon is the perfect counterpoint to Guincho: warm, shallow, flat water that's ideal for learning and freestyle. The lagoon side is protected and forgiving, while the adjacent ocean beach (Praia da Rainha) offers waves for when you want them.
It's the top choice for beginners and schools around Lisbon. Best in 15–25 knots of steady Nortada.
Fonte da Telha (Costa da Caparica)
The long, sandy Costa da Caparica stretches for miles south of the river, and Fonte da Telha at its southern end is the pick for kiters. Loads of space, cross-shore Nortada and mellow beach break make it a fun playground when the wind fills in.
Beach restaurants line the front for a proper Portuguese lunch afterwards. Best in 18–28 knots.
Carcavelos
The closest sea spot to the city and reachable by train along the Cascais line. Carcavelos is a wide bay beach that picks up the westerly wind, tucked a little out of the full Guincho blast, so conditions are usually a touch more manageable.
Being so accessible, it can get busy — ride early or late and mind the swimmers in summer. Best in 15–25 knots.
Trafaria / Cova do Vapor
Right where the Tagus meets the ocean on the south bank, the beaches around Trafaria and Cova do Vapor offer flatter, more sheltered water than the open coast — a handy option for lighter days and for progressing riders.
You can even hop across on the ferry from Belém for a car-free session. Best in 15–25 knots.
Tips for kitesurfing near Lisbon
- Season: The Nortada is most reliable from May to September, peaking through the afternoon. Mornings are often light — plan your session for later in the day.
- Wetsuit: The Atlantic stays cool even in summer. A 3/2mm is fine in peak season; bring a 4/3mm for spring and autumn.
- Guincho respect: It's a stunning spot but not a beginner one — the wind is strong and the shore is rocky. Build up at the lagoon first.
- Getting there: Carcavelos and Cascais are on the train line; the other spots are easiest by car or a short taxi.
