Amsterdam is known for its canals and cycling culture, but it's also perfectly positioned for kitesurfing. Within an hour's drive you can reach some of the Netherlands' best spots — from wave-rich North Sea beaches to butter-flat inland water.
Whether you're a beginner looking for safe learning conditions or an experienced rider chasing waves and freestyle, this guide will help you find the perfect spot near Amsterdam.
IJmuiden Beach
IJmuiden is probably the closest quality kitesurfing beach to Amsterdam, making it incredibly popular with city dwellers. The beach offers consistent wind, especially from southwest to northwest, and decent waves when the wind picks up.
It works in all tides and has plenty of space, even on busy days. There's a large car park right by the beach, plus showers and cafés nearby. The northern end is generally less crowded if you prefer more room. Best in 15–25 knots, year-round.
Zandvoort
Just south of IJmuiden, Zandvoort offers a more resort-like atmosphere with excellent conditions. The beach is wide and long, with designated kite zones to keep swimmers safe.
It gets good waves and has a bit more protection from northerly winds than IJmuiden. The town has great infrastructure — beach clubs, restaurants, parking — and is easily reached by train from Amsterdam, perfect for a car-free day trip. Best in 15–30 knots of onshore wind.
Schellinkhout (IJsselmeer)
If you prefer flatwater over waves, Schellinkhout on the IJsselmeer is your spot. This inland lake offers butter-flat water perfect for learning, practising tricks, or just smooth cruising.
It works best with southwest winds and has a grassy launch that's easy on your kit. There's a small kite school on site, changing rooms and a cosy café. The vibe is relaxed and friendly — great for beginners. Best in 15–25 knots.
Muiderberg (IJsselmeer)
The closest flatwater spot to Amsterdam, Muiderberg is ideal when you want a quick session without much travel. Located on the IJsselmeer just east of the city, it offers shallow, flat water perfect for learning and progression.
A sandy beach with grassy areas makes setup easy. It can get crowded on good wind days given its proximity to the city, but there's usually room for everyone. Great in 12–20 knots and light-wind days.
Wijk aan Zee
Just north of IJmuiden, Wijk aan Zee offers similar conditions but with fewer crowds. This charming coastal village has a wide beach with good waves and consistent wind — less known among tourists, popular with locals.
It has designated kite zones and works well in westerlies. There's ample parking and a few beach cafés, though facilities are more limited than Zandvoort. The quieter atmosphere makes it perfect for a relaxed session. Best in 15–25 knots.
