The Algarve is Portugal's sunshine coast, and it kites brilliantly. Faro makes a natural base: to the east lie the sheltered lagoons of the Ria Formosa, and a short drive west opens up the flatwater of Alvor and the beach breaks of Lagos and Portimão. Warm water and long summers seal the deal.

Alvor
The Ria de Alvor is the Algarve's flatwater jewel: a wide, shallow estuary that turns into a glassy playground on the incoming tide, with the open beach right alongside for waves. It's superb for learning and freestyle, and simply gorgeous with the turquoise water and dunes.
Very tide-dependent, so time your session around high water. Best in 15–25 knots of the westerly summer breeze.
Ria Formosa / Fuseta
The closest flatwater to Faro. The Ria Formosa is a maze of barrier islands and lagoons, and the area around Fuseta offers shallow, protected water that's ideal for beginners and cruising. A beautiful, wildlife-rich setting inside a natural park.
As with all lagoons here, watch the tide — the water comes and goes. Best in 15–22 knots.
Praia de Faro (Ilha de Faro)
The barrier-island beach right by the airport, with the open Atlantic on one side and the calm Ria Formosa channel on the other. That dual aspect makes it a versatile, close-to-town option — waves out front, flatter water behind.
The narrow island gets busy in high summer, so pick your zone and timing carefully. Best in 15–25 knots.
Lagos — Meia Praia
Meia Praia is Lagos' long eastern beach — four kilometres of open sand with room to ride and a lively town behind. It picks up the westerly summer wind well and offers a friendly beach break that suits most riders.
Reachable by train, and a great base for a kiting holiday. Best in 15–25 knots.
Praia da Rocha (Portimão)
The big, dramatic beach at Portimão, framed by golden cliffs. Praia da Rocha catches solid westerly wind and swell, offering a proper wave session in a stunning setting — and everything the resort town has to offer for the après-kite.
Best on the bigger wind days when the sea breeze really kicks in. Best in 18–28 knots.
Tips for kitesurfing in the Algarve
- Wind pattern: Summer brings a dependable westerly/south-westerly sea breeze, strongest in the afternoons. It's generally lighter and warmer than the Nortada further north.
- Tides rule the lagoons: Alvor, the Ria Formosa and Praia de Faro all depend on the tide for their flatwater — check the tide table before you go.
- Wetsuit: The Algarve has the warmest water in Portugal. A shorty or 3/2mm covers summer; a 4/3mm is plenty for spring and autumn.
- Base yourself well: Faro suits the eastern lagoons; stay around Portimão or Lagos for easy access to the western wave beaches.
